The Sunbonnet House, designed by the preeminent architect, Bernard Maybeck in 1899, is probably the most important historic house in the city of Palo Alto. The Sunbonnet House was one of Maybeck’s earliest works, and is believed to be the oldest still standing intact. We were extremely honored to be called in for involvement, especially after learning disappointments from the new Owners. Their previous contractor left some craftsmanship and architectural sensitivity to be desired. The extent of repair work ran the gamut – correcting poorly placed rebar in foundation, reframing of walls, as well as many other architectural, structural, and water management issues. After months of analysis and construction, we restored the Sunbonnet House to its most original condition when possible with new modifications fulfilling the Owners’ and the Architect’s vision of a new modern home sensitive to Maybeck’s architectonic.
